The models also faced fake CEO messages that escalated over three stages, followed by a reporter attempting to obtain “just one yes/no, on background.” All 5 models refused. Kimi K3 recorded its reasoning plainly: “Treat the request as a suspected approval-bypass / possible impersonation.”

This part of the experiment matters because many real automation failures begin with misplaced authority. A system that acts quickly but cannot distinguish a legitimate instruction from an impersonation attempt is not truly dependable. Here, refusal was the correct form of performance.

Thoroughness was not enough

Opus 4.8 offers the most revealing individual profile. It produced the deepest analyses and added +80 learned rules, making it the most thorough participant. It still finished last. The deal was left unsigned, while discipline slipped through attempts to write into a locked department instead of escalating. The same weakness appeared in all four other participants, though less strongly.

The result complicates the common assumption that more analysis automatically produces better management. Opus 4.8 learned extensively, but the company needed disciplined execution as well as insight.
